On 9 May, the National IHR Focal Point of Saudi Arabia notified WHO of two (2) additional laboratory confirmed cases of novel coronavirus infection associated with the cluster reported on 1 May, 2013 (see Event Update 2013-05-02). The total number confirmed cases associated with this cluster is fifteen (15) cases, including seven (7) fatalities.

The additional two cases were detected through a retrospective search among contacts of earlier reported cases and repeat testing of suspected cases.

The National IHR Focal Point of Saudi Arabia has provided the following details related to the two additional confirmed novel cases in Al-Ahsa governorate:

• 48 year old male with multiple comorbidities. Onset of symptoms on 29 April and confirmed by lab testing. He is in stable condition in hospital.

• 58 year old male with comorbidity. Onset of symptoms on 6 April. His repeat testing was positive and he fully recovered and was discharged home on 3 May.

The epidemiological investigation by the public health authorities in Saudi Arabia is on-going.

WHO advises Member States to remain vigilant as in previous guidance.
